Underpainting, dean Bootman portrait

This is the second stage of the portrait. This is the underpainting done using Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue and a little of Titanium White. It is done on the finest of Belgian Portrait Linens using an oil ground. Next I will apply the color.

Russell,
So, are you doing the underpainting in a raw or burnt umber? Recently I wen to philly to watch Nelson Shanks demo his painting method. Hope you are well!

Hey Russ,
Another thought to share - I use a raw umber as a this wash then after an initial block-in, I will mix varying amounts of white til it is a full tonal painting. Then at that point, it seems easier to glaze and build up the color layer.
